Scarf storage methods

Once you build up a scarf collection (whether it’s just a couple or enough to make a parachute), it’s time to come up with a way to organize them. Organizing your scarves will keep them wrinkle free, protect them from damage, and keep them looking new for years. Plus, when you’re bleary eyed in the morning, you’ll appreciate being able to grab a scarf without having to hunt around for it. So without further ado, here are four scarf storage solutions (plus some other tips and tricks!):

1. Scarf Drawer

This one’s obvious, but if you happen to have a spare drawer in your bedroom, this is a perfect place to store your scarves. You can either fold the scarves and stack them, or you can roll and stack them, as shown in the photo. I personally prefer the rolling method — it’s easier to roll a scarf than fold it.

2. Scarf Tub

If drawer space is limited, consider using a plastic tub for scarf storage. You can find plastic tubs in all shapes and sizes, from tall and skinny towers to short and wide under-the-bed storage. Plastic storage tubs will work to protect your precious scarves from moth, dust, and pet damage.

3. Scarf Hanger

A scarf hanger is probably the most space-saving solution of all these storage tips. Simply drape your scarves over the bottom bar of a triangle-shaped hanger. If you have problems with the scarves slipping off, you could secure them with a loose knot. While this storage method is a good space saver, remember that valuable or delicate scarves shouldn’t be hung, as this can cause stretching or damage.

Personally, this is the method I use. I have one vintage scarf that was my grandma’s that I keep folded in a drawer, but all my fashion scarves get hung up!

4. Scarf Cluster

With scarves in every color, print, and pattern, they can double as lovely room decor. You could drape them over a chair back, or even tie them to a foot board, as shown above. This is a pretty storage solution for your scarves, but remember that this won’t protect them from sun, pet, or dirt damage.

Other Scarf Storage Tips

  • If you’re storing scarves for a season (for example putting winter scarves away during summer), you should take extra steps in storing them to avoid damage from bugs, pets, and dirt. Always wash scarves before storing them for a season — food, makeup, or body odor can attract bugs and other damaging nuisances. Putting them into sealed baggies and in a plastic storage tub will protect them further and keep them looking new.
  • Keep your scarves away from direct sunlight, which can cause discoloration. Exposed areas of fabric will likely lighten and fade, while the areas underneath will stay vibrant.
  • If you have pets, take extra precaution when storing scarves. Cats and dogs alike love to make a bed out of a pile of scarves. And I’ve found my cat loves to bite and bat at scarf fringe.
